We add one inch to length and width or diameter so that the pan has room for expansion/contraction due to temperature change.

The flange is 1.25” all the way around. You can add 2.5” to the length, width, or diameter to get the outside flange to outside flame dimension.

How large of a burner can I use?
Firepit: At least 3” from the inside walls of your fire feature. Most commonly the H-Burner should be narrower than the back wall of the fireplace.
