What Is Lava Rock & Why It Belongs in Your Fire Feature

Lava rock is a naturally formed volcanic stone trusted in fire features for decades. Its porous structure promotes airflow and heat distribution while adding rustic beauty to both traditional and modern fire pit designs.

You can use lava rock in:

  • Gas fire pits and fireplaces
  • Outdoor planters and landscaping features
  • Rustic accents and large decorative rock installations

Unlike ceramic logs or synthetic alternatives, lava rock resists cracking and discoloration under extreme heat. It’s safe, durable, and made for a clean, natural burn—indoors or out.

XXL Lava Rock – Oversized Texture for Maximum Impact

Compared to smaller lava rocks, the XXL size:

  • Creates bold visual impact with rugged, natural texture
  • Enhances flame contrast with deep brown and black hues
  • Complements large fire bowls and outdoor settings

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Flame Guards

  • Why do I see two different dimensions for the flame guard?

The assembled dimensions are larger than the pan so that the flame guard rests on the tabletop and sits away from the flames.

  • What size flame guard do I need?

You can look up our Flame Guard size chart here to determine the best size for your fire pit. We recommend having at least a 2.5” clearance on each side of the burner area of your fire pit, and that your flame guard be placed on the outside of your fire pit for optimal performance.

  • Do you make custom flame guards?

Yes! We can make you a custom flame guard. To get a quote for yours, please email [email protected] or call 888-264-1017 and one of our representatives will gladly assist you.

  • What is a flame guard and what does it do?

A flame guard (also called a wind guard) is a clear glass barrier that surrounds your fire pit burner. It helps block wind, stabilize the flame, and protect surrounding surfaces and people from direct heat.

  • Do I really need a flame guard for my fire pit?

If your fire pit is in a windy or open area, yes. A flame guard keeps your flame steady, improves fuel efficiency, and protects the flame from being blown out. It is especially important for electronic ignition systems.

  • Will a flame guard block the heat?

Not at all. Flame guards are made of tempered glass, which allows heat and light to pass through while shielding the flame from wind.

  • Are flame guards safe to use?

Yes. Our flame guards are made from high-strength tempered glass that’s heat-resistant, shatter-resistant, and designed for high-temperature environments.

  • Can I use a flame guard with any fire pit?

Flame guards work with most fire pits, especially rectangular, square, or round fire tables. Just make sure you choose the right size and shape to fit around your burner area.

  • How do I choose the right size flame guard?

Measure the burner area, not the whole fire pit. Your flame guard should be about 2–3 inches larger than the burner on all sides for proper protection and ventilation.

  • Will a flame guard block my view of the fire?

Not at all! The clear glass gives you a full view of the flame while adding a sleek, modern look to your fire feature.

  • How do I clean a flame guard?

Simply wipe it down with a soft cloth and ammonia free glass cleaner. Make sure the glass is cool before cleaning to avoid streaking or cracking.

  • Can I leave my flame guard on year-round?

Yes. It’s designed for outdoor use and can stay on in all seasons. For extreme weather or long periods of non-use, you can store it indoors to keep it looking brand new.

  • Burner Covers

  • Does the lid fit over or inside of the flame guard?

Burner covers sit outside of the drop-in pans and inside of the flame guard.

  • What is a burner cover, and why do I need one?

A burner cover is a protective lid that goes over your fire pit burner when it’s not in use. It helps keep out rain, leaves, debris, and critters. So your fire pit stays clean and ready to use.

  • Can I leave my fire pit uncovered?

You can, but it’s not recommended. Exposure to the elements can lead to rust, clogged burners, and reduced performance over time. A cover helps extend the life of your investment.

  • Are burner covers heat resistant?

Our burner covers are made to withstand high outdoor temperatures, but they should only be placed on the fire pit after the flame has been turned off and the components have cooled down.

  • Do covers come in different shapes and sizes?

Absolutely. We offer round, square, and rectangular covers to fit our different burner styles and pan sizes.

  • Do I need a burner cover if I already have a fabric fire pit cover?

Yes. While fabric covers protect the whole unit, a burner cover specifically protects the burner components from moisture getting in underneath. They work great together.

  • Fittings and Parts

  • What makes your quiet flex lines better than a regular gas line?

Whistle free flex line has alternating corrugation to disrupt gas flow and prevent whistling.

  • What should my water column pressure be?

For natural gas you will need 7" to 9" water column. For propane you will need 9" to 11" water column. Your contractor will have to ensure the gas line is sized correctly to deliver sufficient volume to your burner and get the maximum flame height.

  • Do I need vents in my fire pit?

All natural gas and propane fire features require a minimum of 36 square inches of venting total. The vents would be on opposing sides of the enclosure.

  • How do I stop my burner from whistling?

In most cases, whistling comes from improper connector sizing or unauthorized equipment use such as connectors purchased from local hardware stores. The connectors that we offer are designed to help eliminate whistling and are not available at the average hardware store.

  • What parts come with a fire pit kit, and what do I need to buy separately?

Most kits include basic parts like flex lines and key valves, but depending on your setup, you may need additional fittings, air mixers (for propane), or key extensions. Check the product page for what's included.

  • Can I mix and match parts from different kits?

Some parts are universal, but others are gas-specific or thread-specific (like NPT sizes). Always check compatibility or consult a pro to avoid leaks or unsafe connections.

  • What’s the difference between propane and natural gas fittings?

Propane requires specific fittings like air mixers to burn cleanly, while natural gas doesn’t. Using the wrong parts can lead to poor performance or safety hazards.

  • How do I know what size fittings I need?

Most residential gas fire pits use 1/2" or 3/4" fittings. Measure your gas line or check your burner specs. Or just reach out to our team. We're happy to help you find the right size.

  • Do I need to seal the threads on my fittings?

Yes! Always use gas-rated thread sealant on NPT threads only (like yellow Teflon tape or pipe dope) to prevent leaks. Never use regular white plumber’s tape for gas connections.

  • Can I install the fittings and parts myself?

Some handy homeowners can do it, especially for match light kits. But for safety, we always recommend having a licensed professional handle gas connections.

  • What if I lose or damage a part? Can I buy replacements?

Absolutely. We offer individual replacement parts so you don’t have to buy a whole new kit. Reach out with what you need, and we’ll get you the right part.

  • Lava Rocks, Lite Stones & Balls

  • How much Lava Rock do I need for my fire feature?

Use our handy lava rock calculator to determine how much lava rock you or your clients will need for your fire feature.

  • Can I use lava rock with fire glass?

Yes! using small lava rock as a base layer is very cost effective. We recommend using small lava rock as a base to completely cover the burner and then adding 2" of fire glass depth on top of that.

  • How many lava rocks come in a 10 pound bag?

All our 10 pound bags of lava rocks are based off of weight and not quantity of rocks. The number of rocks will very slightly from bag to bag.

  • How many tumbled lava stones come in a 10 pound bag?

All our 10 pound bags of tumbled lava stones are based off of weight and not quantity of stones. The number of stones will very slightly from bag to bag.

  • What are your Lite Stones made of?

Lite Stones and Lite Stone Balls are made of a lightweight ceramic fiber material.

  • What is the proper media base for lite stones and lite stone balls?

Use small black lava rock as a base to properly insulate the burner. The stones/balls can be placed on top and rest in the flames like a decorative topping.  The firepit should be fully functional with just the lava rock.

  • Can I use all Medium or XXL Lava for my firepit?

We recommend using a base layer of Small Black Lava to insulate the burner and then you can use the larger pieces as a decorative topping.

  • Which tab should I use in your calculator for Tumbled Lava Stone?

Tumbled lava rocks have similar density to fire glass.

  • Do I cover the burner with fire glass?

YES, a burner should NEVER be used unless it is completely covered. A 1/4" diameter media base is strongly recommended to cover the burner before applying the final topping. The media should cover the burner by about 1/2" to 1" before the final topping is added. Our small lava rock works best. Operating a burner without proper coverage can cause warpage and possible permanent damage to the burner and burner pan. This will also void the warranty on the product.

  • Are these products safe for high heat?

Absolutely. All of our lava rocks, Lite Stones, and Lite Stone Balls are rated for use in fire pits and fireplaces. Just make sure they are completely dry before lighting to avoid any popping or cracking.

  • Do I need to replace lava rock over time?

Yes. Lava rock can deteriorate after a few seasons due to weather and heat. Check it annually and replace as needed for best performance.

not just for fire pits

"This may not be for everyone, but I love rocks and use them a lot in my landscaping. I was able to get all of the smaller rocks at a big box store and the super extra-large ones at a local landscaping store that has gone out of business. American Fire Glass had just what I wanted to go next to my new fence. I placed my order online with hopes that it would be what I was looking for - it is even better than I had hoped for. Very reasonable delivery time and in my opinion, just the right amount of extra-large, now to fill in with smaller rocks. If I can get my photos attached, you will be able to see that the lava rocks are porous, because I had a weed growing in one. :)"

Q&A

have a 36" diameter round firepit opening. We will also be combininging this will smaller size lava rock. How much of the 4-6" stuff do you think I would need??
In a 36" opening you will need a base layer of 60lbs of Small Black Lava Rock to insulate the burner in 2" of media. The fire pit should run with just the Small Black Lava Rock and then the larger pieces are a decorative topping that rests in the flames. Approximately 50lbs of the XXL should give you nice coverage.
About how many rocks are 10 lbs? Looking for sauna rocks and the calculator said I need 94 lbs of lava rock for an area 20”x30”x6” deep, which doesn’t seem right.
The quantity for that area looks correct, but we have not tested our lava rock for your use so we do not recommend that you use these for a sauna.
Are these lava rocks 100% natural and sourced from nature? I want to make sure that there are no synthetic chemicals or dyes in these rocks that could leach out while using.
Correct, these are 100% natural and sourced from nature.
Do you have some kind of color "chart" to help select brown to black? What burner is recommended if used in an outdoor fireplace with NG?
Hi Ken, all of our colors are true to the images we have posted. There isn't a chart, but we do offer samples of the colors if that will help your project. All of our burners will work for an outdoor fire pit. Each burner, depending on size, requires different amounts of glass. You can calculate the amount necessary using our calculator here: https://americanfireglass.com/calculator
May I please know the ETA of this item? Thank you!
Hi Rachel, XXL Lava Rock should be available within 4-6 weeks.
