Why do I see two different dimensions for the flame guard?
The assembled dimensions are larger than the pan so that the flame guard rests on the tabletop and sits away from the flames.

You can look up our Flame Guard size chart here to determine the best size for your fire pit. We recommend having at least a 2.5” clearance on each side of the burner area of your fire pit, and that your flame guard be placed on the outside of your fire pit for optimal performance.

A burner cover is a protective lid that goes over your fire pit burner when it’s not in use. It helps keep out rain, leaves, debris, and critters. So your fire pit stays clean and ready to use.

Can I leave my fire pit uncovered?
You can, but it’s not recommended. Exposure to the elements can lead to rust, clogged burners, and reduced performance over time. A cover helps extend the life of your investment.

Our burner covers are made to withstand high outdoor temperatures, but they should only be placed on the fire pit after the flame has been turned off and the components have cooled down.

What should my water column pressure be?
For natural gas you will need 7" to 9" water column. For propane you will need 9" to 11" water column. Your contractor will have to ensure the gas line is sized correctly to deliver sufficient volume to your burner and get the maximum flame height.

All natural gas and propane fire features require a minimum of 36 square inches of venting total. The vents would be on opposing sides of the enclosure.

How do I stop my burner from whistling?
In most cases, whistling comes from improper connector sizing or unauthorized equipment use such as connectors purchased from local hardware stores. The connectors that we offer are designed to help eliminate whistling and are not available at the average hardware store.

Can I use lava rock with fire glass?
Yes! using small lava rock as a base layer is very cost effective. We recommend using small lava rock as a base to completely cover the burner and then adding 2" of fire glass depth on top of that.

All our 10 pound bags of lava rocks are based off of weight and not quantity of rocks. The number of rocks will very slightly from bag to bag.

Use small black lava rock as a base to properly insulate the burner. The stones/balls can be placed on top and rest in the flames like a decorative topping. The firepit should be fully functional with just the lava rock.

Can I use all Medium or XXL Lava for my firepit?
We recommend using a base layer of Small Black Lava to insulate the burner and then you can use the larger pieces as a decorative topping.

Tumbled lava rocks have similar density to fire glass.

Do I cover the burner with fire glass?
YES, a burner should NEVER be used unless it is completely covered. A 1/4" diameter media base is strongly recommended to cover the burner before applying the final topping. The media should cover the burner by about 1/2" to 1" before the final topping is added. Our small lava rock works best. Operating a burner without proper coverage can cause warpage and possible permanent damage to the burner and burner pan. This will also void the warranty on the product.

Absolutely. All of our lava rocks, Lite Stones, and Lite Stone Balls are rated for use in fire pits and fireplaces. Just make sure they are completely dry before lighting to avoid any popping or cracking.

"This may not be for everyone, but I love rocks and use them a lot in my landscaping. I was able to get all of the smaller rocks at a big box store and the super extra-large ones at a local landscaping store that has gone out of business. American Fire Glass had just what I wanted to go next to my new fence. I placed my order online with hopes that it would be what I was looking for - it is even better than I had hoped for. Very reasonable delivery time and in my opinion, just the right amount of extra-large, now to fill in with smaller rocks. If I can get my photos attached, you will be able to see that the lava rocks are porous, because I had a weed growing in one. :)"

- have a 36" diameter round firepit opening. We will also be combininging this will smaller size lava rock. How much of the 4-6" stuff do you think I would need??
- In a 36" opening you will need a base layer of 60lbs of Small Black Lava Rock to insulate the burner in 2" of media. The fire pit should run with just the Small Black Lava Rock and then the larger pieces are a decorative topping that rests in the flames. Approximately 50lbs of the XXL should give you nice coverage.
- About how many rocks are 10 lbs? Looking for sauna rocks and the calculator said I need 94 lbs of lava rock for an area 20”x30”x6” deep, which doesn’t seem right.
- The quantity for that area looks correct, but we have not tested our lava rock for your use so we do not recommend that you use these for a sauna.
- Are these lava rocks 100% natural and sourced from nature? I want to make sure that there are no synthetic chemicals or dyes in these rocks that could leach out while using.

- Hi Ken, all of our colors are true to the images we have posted. There isn't a chart, but we do offer samples of the colors if that will help your project. All of our burners will work for an outdoor fire pit. Each burner, depending on size, requires different amounts of glass.
